Next Porsche 911 joins the digital dash age with new instrument layout

Spy photos of the next Porsche 911 Cabrio testing in the USA show a digital revolution in the dashboard.

The old-school analogue instrument cluster in the Porsche 911 – with three round binnacles and traditional gauges – is heading into history.

Work is underway on a fully digital display for the next major update of the classic German sports car – known to Porsche enthusiasts as the ‘992.2’ generation.

A test car caught on camera in the US shows the revolutionary new approach for the Porsche 911, which mirrors the dash display already used in the Porsche Taycan electric model.

The current Porsche 911 (992 generation) uses an analogue tachometer in the centre, and a digital display on either side, with graphics simulating analogue dials. The previous-generation 911 (991.2) had four traditional analogue dials and one small screen.

In the facelifted ‘992.2’ 911, the traditional central tachometer is carried over to monitor engine revolutions, and there are still three big individual dials – but they are all incorporated in a single large TFT screen.

The new look promises better clarity for drivers, and the possibility for more customisation, and comes after the introduction of a central infotainment display as one of the biggest changes in the history of the 911’s dashboard.

The miles-an-hour readout for the 911 test car’s speedometer, on the left-hand side of the display, shows it was set for testing work in the Rocky Mountains in the USA.

The 911 Cabriolet test car has camouflage around the front end to hide changes to the car’s daytime running lamps (DRLs) and turn signals, which explains the ugly lights hanging from the nose to satisfy legal requirements.

The next facelift for the 911 is also expected to include changes to the rear bumper and engine cover and so this area is also camouflaged on the US test car.

Testing for the next update of the 911 comes as company insiders claim Porsche is considering a return to naturally-aspirated engines in the Carrera base models of the company’s bedrock sports car.
