BMW Z4 Touring Coupe could become a $500,000 limited-edition model – report

A BMW specialist publication claims plans are firming for the Z4 Touring Coupé concept to enter production, but the limited-run sports car could be priced from an eye-watering €300,000 ($AU500,000).

When BMW unveiled the Z4 Touring Coupé concept in May, the German car-maker said it held no plans to put the two-door shooting brake into production.

However, reports to the contrary surfaced just days after the reveal, and now the latest news from a BMW specialist publication suggests it is a chance to be made as a production model – albeit for a considerable price.

Earlier this week, BMW Blog claimed the BMW Z4 Touring Coupé could be priced from almost 300,000 Euros – equivalent to $500,000 in Australian currency – if it does indeed roll down the production line.

This represents a significant increase on the circa-$US250,000 ($AU375,000) price tag reported by the publication in May shortly after the concept car’s unveiling.

The latest report also poured cold water on earlier speculation that the Z4 Coupe would be powered by the 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder engine – designated as ‘S58’ – from the M3 and M4, as the Z4 cannot fit the engine.

Instead, should it go into production, the sports coupe would need to utilise a modified version of the Z4 M40i’s ‘B58’ 3.0-litre single-turbo six-cylinder engine, which produces 285kW/500Nm in the current convertible.

While BMW Blog’s latest report claims there could be 50 examples of the Z4 Touring Coupé built for German customers, this could be a misinterpretation of comments made by BMW’s design boss at the concept’s reveal.

In May, BMW design boss Adrian van Hooydonk said there could be interest in building the model for limited production, providing a rough estimate of how many examples could be made.

“[The Z4 coupe concept] is a one-off at the moment, and there’s no concrete plans to put it in production,” Mr van Hooydonk said in May, as reported by Motor1. 

“But, we made the agreement before we set sail for Lake Como (where the concept was revealed) that, if there’s enough interest, we will take a look at it. That could be a very low-volume version, like 50 cars or so.”

According to a notable BMW insider – who goes by the online pseudonym ‘ynguldyn’ – the current Z4 convertible is due to end production in March 2026.

A blurry image found online appears to show an updated Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series. Is Australia’s oldest ‘new’ car about to get another facelift – or is this a retro-inspired model for Japan? Despite the increase in electric vehicles, officials say vehicle carbon emissions have failed to drop in Europe, thanks to more powerful – and heavier – new cars. A new report from the European Union has revealed CO2 emissions from vehicles are the same as they were 12 years ago – despite the adoption of hybrid and electric cars. According to the European Court of Auditors, real emissions from cars – which account for three-quarters of new motor vehicle registrations – have not dropped. While petrol cars have “marginally decreased” by 4.6 per cent over the period, diesel cars have remained constant, it says.
