Mystery continues to surround tonight's 'Battery Day', the much-anticipated Tesla event which will follow the company's annual meeting of stockholders. Last week Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote "It will be very insane" in response to a Tweet from account Teslarati, regarding claims of a new battery originally published by the website Elektrek.

Renault and Nissan ‘s Sunderland production facility has been the victim of a global cyber attack, causing costly production delays. The global cyber attack began late last week and has so far affected more than 75,000 systems in 100 countries. The attack hits vulnerable Microsoft Windows machines and encrypts the user’s filesystem, taking it ransom. The user is asked to pay a fee of US$300 to have their computer unlocked. While the attack can easily be prevented by updating the operating system, many automated machines and dumb terminals connected to the internet are being infiltrated. A Renault spokesperson told  Autocar, “Groupe Renault confirms it was impacted by the global cyber attack that began late on Friday May 12. Europe’s Toyota Yaris Cross has received a mid-life update with more power, a revised look and new technology. Plans for the Australian version are yet to be announced. The updated 2024 Toyota Yaris Cross small SUV has been unveiled in Europe with an upgraded hybrid powertrain and new styling.  This is the first update for the Yaris Cross – the SUV sibling to the Toyota Yaris hatch – since it was first introduced to the Australian market in 2020.  Mirroring changes to the European-market Yaris hatch, the 2024 Yaris Cross in Europe brings with it mild styling changes to the exterior and interior of the SUV, improved safety features, and a more powerful hybrid system.  While pre-orders in Europe are due to commence this month, there’s no word on when we can expect to see the updates flow onto the Yaris Cross in Australia.  European-market Yaris Cross vehicles are manufactured in France, whereas Australian-delivered examples are built in Japan. 2015-19 Toyota Prius V recalled

Toyota Australia has recalled the 2015-19 Prius V over concerns about the seatbelt reminder switch. According to the company, improper assembly of the electrical contacts in the seatbelt reminder switch means the driver's belt reminder might not switch off – even when the seatbelt is being used. If the seatbelt reminder doesn't turn off, the flashing warning light and chime could distract the driver. A total of 1037 cars are included in the recall – a VIN list is attached here.

2019 World Car Awards: Finalists announced

The countdown to the World Car Finals has begun this week, with a list of 10 finalists announced for the overall title, along with the contenders in five specialist categories. According to the firm, a jury of 86 "distinguished international automotive journalists" selected the finalists by secret ballot, based on their own assessment of the vehicle as part of their professional work. The initial list of 40 models has been shaved to 10 finalists, with representation from around the world.

A blurry image found online appears to show an updated Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series. Is Australia’s oldest ‘new’ car about to get another facelift – or is this a retro-inspired model for Japan? A Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series has been photographed in Japan with what appears to be its first makeover in more than 15 years – and it could be in showrooms by the end of this year. The blurry image – which appears to have been taken from a security camera, and shared by @oriba_lc300 and Kurdistan Automotive Blog on Instagram – shows a LandCruiser 76 Series wagon in Japan with a camouflage wrap over the front fascia and a new wheel design. Last week’s online leak might have taken some wind from Ford’s sails, but its long-anticipated Mustang Mach-E electric SUV has nevertheless been officially revealed with some fanfare. The Mustang Mach-E is the Blue Oval’s move against the Tesla Model 3 and Model X, with other competitors including the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron quattro. But an ongoing shortage of stock has put a temporary hold on EOFY sales for motor vehicles.  It’s the end of the road for End Of Financial Year deals on new motor vehicles – at least for the time being – a leading car company executive has claimed. And, in the absence of any EOFY new-car deals in the market currently, there appears to be consensus across the auto industry. When asked if the pandemic and ongoing severe stock shortages had brought an end of End Of Financial Year (EOFY) deals, the boss of Kia Australia Damien Meredith said: “I don’t think you will see one for a long time.” The average waiting time for new motor vehicles ranges from three to 12 months; in extreme cases some cars have delays of two years or more. Electric-car charging network Evie increases prices by up to 40 per cent

One of Australia’s largest electric-vehicle charging networks – Evie – has increased prices for the second time in six months. Australian electric-car charging network Evie will increase prices by up to 43 per cent next week – the second rise in about six months. The largest hike – in effect from Thursday 18 January 2024 – will be applied to its slowest chargers (22kW), which are planned to increase in price from 35 cents per kilowatt-hour (c/kWh), to 50c/kWh. Evie 50kW fast chargers will increase from 50c/kWh to 58c/kWh (up 16 per cent), its 150kW ‘super-fast’ chargers will increase from 60c/kWh to 68c/kWh (up 13 per cent), and its 350kW ‘ultra-fast’ chargers will increase from 65c/kWh to 73c/kWh (up 12 per cent). “This decision is driven by our commitment to investing in a top-notch, reliable, and expansive charging network across the country,” Evie said as justification for the price rise in a notice to customers this week.
