Australian muscle steals the show at Gosford Classic Car Museum auctions

A handful of classic Australian muscle heroes have gone under the hammer as part of the inaugural Gosford Classic Car Museum auction. 

Over 2000 people turned up to watch 68 cars go up for auction, ranging from a Leyland P76 to a Porsche 959 Komfort.

Buyers were most interested in classic Australian muscle cars, with none of the supercars and exotica up for sale reaching their reserves – most of which were pushing $1 million.

The highest-priced sale was a 1971 Chrysler Valiant VH Charger E 38 that went for $181,000.

In second place, and flying the flag for Europe, was a 1966 Jaguar E-Type Roadster for $155,500, followed closely by a $153,000 1978 Ford Falcon XC Cobra.

Another E-Type claimed fourth place, too, in the form of a 1966 Coupe sold for $128,000.

Some of the standouts that didn’t reach their reserve include a 1988 Porsche 959 Komfort passed in at $1.6 million, a 1968 Lamborghini Miura P400 passed in at $1.35m and a 2004 Porsche Carrera GT, for which the top $1m bid wasn’t enough.

Other unsold cars include a 2016 Porsche 911R, passed in at $640,000, and a 1991 Jaguar XJR-15 ending at $600,000.

There was a lot of pre-auction interest in the 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III barn find, but it failed to sell, with bidding ending at $430,000. Also not making reserve was a 1970 Holden Monaro HG GTS for $169,000, around $11,000 under its estimated value.

A 1966 Volkswagen Kombi 21-window sold for $104,000 – $34,000 more than estimation – and a 1974 Ferrari Dino GT4 with 1169-kilometres, sold for $88,000.
